AiRM 2014
AiRM 2014 entitled BLUE as an homage to the artist, film maker, political activist Derek Jarman. BLUE was his last film and features a single image of the colour blue . The voiceover, written by Jarman, documents his brave and courageous struggle with AIDS-related illnesses, losing his sight and his impending death. AiRM2014 artists were invited to respond to Jarman’s legacy as a brilliant film maker, plantsman, writer, gay activist. We showed his film BLUE at a number of local community venues to bring to attention to the need to celebrate his memory and encourage our audiences to visit Prospect cottage where he lived and to pay their respects at his grave at St Clements church Old Romney.
In addition, we were fortunate to be able to commission Peter Fillingham to make a tribute to Derek Jarman who he had worked with over many years. His installation, sited at St Clements church, ‘initially conceived as a sea of chairs, this environment/site-specific installation/digital photographic work will materialise and humbly share my relationship with the site of the church, the place of burial of my friend, teacher and collaborator Derek Jarman, during this year, the 20th anniversary of his passing’.
2014 artists were Becky Beasley, Jenny Allinson, Lorna Hamilton-Brown, Naomi Holdbrook, Nicholas Johnson, Peter Fillingham, Sarah Sparkes, Finlay Taylor, Susan Trangmar, Will Wade, Catherine Yass.
